How to style jeans if they’re not your favourite wardrobe item

They may not be your favourite, but with so many styles on offer these days, a pair of jeans isn’t really just a pair of jeans. In fact, we’d even go so far to say that a good pair of jeans should be a wardrobe staple.

Long gone are the days of standard blue denims. With jeans available from skinny to high waisted, there’s no better time to embrace them as a crucial part of your everyday wardrobe. Here’s how to style them.

Step into statement shoes

There’s no better way to turn your jeans from a casual daytime outfit to one that’s fit for night time than with a pair of statement heels. The possibilities here are almost endless, giving you the option of pairing your jeans with anything from a plain tee to a silk cami. After all, with statement shoes, who cares about what’s going on up top?

Embrace logos

After making a catwalk comeback sometime last year, it seems as though logos are here to stay. Pledge your allegiance to your favourite designer brands and invest in a graphic tee, a designer handbag or even some logo-laden pearls (a la Chanel) that will make even the drabbest pair of jeans fashion week worthy.

Toughen them up

You’d be hard pushed to find a jacket that goes with jeans as well as one that’s made of leather. An ‘I woke up like this’ look is easily done with a pair of wide-leg cropped jeans, a button-down shirt and a motorcycle jacket. Or, if you’re looking for something with a little less edge, layer a fur-lined leather jacket over a high waisted pair in light wash blue.

The Canadian Tuxedo

Jeans aren’t your favourite, right? So you’ve probably never considered pairing them with even more denim up top. It might be comedically known as the Canadian Tuxedo, but trust us when we say that there is a way to wear this with style. Swap your go-to t-shirt with a chambray shirt or experiment with contrasts by wearing a dark wash denim jacket with a lighter jean. If you’re feeling brave, you might even want to consider a denim plus size co ord set. Follow our advice, and you’ll look more Gigi than, lest we forget, Timberlake at the 2001 VMAs.

Keep it chic

Take inspiration from the streets of Paris and keep your jean wearing chic and straightforward. The secret to dressing like a French woman is to always make sure you’ve got the perfect fit. Regardless of trends, choose a pair of jeans that flatter your body, and you’ll have the basis for an outfit that makes you look instantly polished and pulled together.

Try a different denim

Who said that your denim had to take the form of jeans? A denim skirt paired with a light jumper or even a basic tank can look effortless for those days when picking an outfit isn’t at the top of your list. It’s also easy to make a denim skirt transition from summer to autumn with the simple addition of some over the knee boots.
