Knowing Your Skin

It is very essential to know your skin type for its proper maintenance. Understanding your skin will make it easier to choose cosmetic products which suit your particular skin type. There are some simple steps to analyze and decide in which category your skin falls:

1. Examine your skin well in front of the mirror. See if it’s dull or has blackheads, acne, pimples etc. There are some regions on the face which might appear different from the rest. Mark those areas.
2. For normal skin, the pH level is 6.5 and if your skin pH level is below 6.5, then it is categorized as dry skin. So, try to find out your skin pH level to understand your skin type well.
3. Clean your face and after an hour place tissues over the nose, cheeks, and forehead. If there are no traces on the tissue paper it means you have a normal skin, whereas if spots are visible on the tissue paper than it indicates an oily skin. These three simple steps can help you know your skin type.

Skin Type 1

There are three broad categories of skin types:

1. Normal skin
You can judge a normal skin as it appears even in color and is usually very clear. It is very soft. A person who possesses normal skin looks fresh even at midday. There are occasional pimples or acne visible, but the skin looks refreshed after the use of facial toner.

Skin Type 2

2. Dry skin
This kind of skin loses moisture and appears very dull. In winters, this kind of skin needs to be moisturized repeatedly with the help of a cream or lotion. It appears flaky and very rough when you touch it. Acne is hardly seen on dry skin. When the the face is washed with soap or a face wash, the skin feels tight.

Skin Type 3

3. Oily skin
This skin type can be easily distinguished from others as it appears shiny. It has open pores and a very thick epidermis. Whiteheads and blackheads are prominent on such skin. Oily skin looks fresh if you apply facial toner. Acne and pimple outbreaks are more frequent as the skin is extremely sebaceous.
