12 Tips for applying hair color at home

Applying hair color at home

Hair coloring can be quite a challenging task if you are not a professional. However, by coloring your hair yourself you can save a handsome amount of money and also get the desired look. Hair coloring can be quite an ordeal for some and the consequences of bad coloring can be way beyond imagination. Keep in mind a few things and you can never go wrong with hair coloring. Read on to be sure the next time you take to the task of hair coloring.

1. Mind the shade

Experimenting with hair colors can be good but only to some extent. Extreme change can be quite drastic. It is thus advised that you must not go more than two shades lighter or darker. For a color change beyond that you must seek professional help. Sudden extreme transformations can make you look like a complete disaster.

2. Keep it simple

If you are coloring your hair at home keep in mind to keep it as simple as you can. For a more dramatic hair coloring, you must head to a professional’s hair salon. Cover the gray and experiment with shades a little lighter or darker at home. For anything beyond that professional is the word.

3. Do not go by the box image

The images of the hair color can be hugely deceiving and it is thus recommended not to go by them. Another thing is that what suits a particular person might not look good on you. The dye will react in a different manner for every person depending on the texture, natural color and health of your hair. Refer to the shade mentioned on the box to decide weather it will suit you or not.

4. Run a test

Before applying the color to your entire hair, you must always run a check on a few strands to know how it will look on your hair. Make sure to try the color before applying on all hair as once the color will be done it is harder to reverse the process.

5. Try two colors

Try using two colors for your hair, this will give you a natural look and also make you look interesting. Take expert advice before experimenting.

6. Do not shampoo

Once you have colored your hair it is advisable that you must not wash the hair for at least a day so that the dye’s pigment gets completely absorbed in your hair.

7. Do not wash on the D day

It is advisable not to wash the hair on the day of coloring. You can however do this a day before coloring. The natural oils of the scalp protect the skin from the dye.

8. Do not over process the ends

As the hair starts to grow, the roots that appear will not be of the same color as your ends. In such a scenario, it is recommended that you must color only the roots until the whole hair needs coloring. Too much coloring can damage your hair thus you must try avoiding it as much as possible.

9. Prepare in advance

Apply a layer of Vaseline around the hairline to prevent any dye contact with the skin. Use an old towel or cloth around your shoulders to prevent color from dripping over your clothes.

10. Manage the color lightness

If the color that you have achieved is darker than what you desired, use a quick fix method. Take some color dye and shampoo in equal quantities, apply this to your hair and let it be there for 5 minutes. Rinse your hair after that. You will achieve the perfect color for sure.

11. Use a good shampoo

Do not use ordinary shampoo for washing your colored hair instead use a shampoo specially meant for colored hair. Invest in a good hair conditioner and shampoo.

12. Try deep conditioning

If you have dry hair, it is recommended to go for deep conditioning within a week before the coloring. Also do this weekly to keep the hair soft and trouble free.
