The Different Approaches To Psychotherapy

There are six main approaches to psychotherapy:

Behavioural therapy


Ivan Pavlov coined the term, ‘classical conditioning,’ which refers to the development of behaviours after constant exposure to stimuli. This can help in desensitizing a patient to phobias and fears they might have. Another version of this is operant conditioning, which is the development of a behaviour through a reward and punishment system.

Cognitive therapy

This method works by focusing on a person’s thoughts and emotions rather than the behaviours they display. It helps patients overcome any negative thought patterns and thus change any harmful behaviours they may be acting on. It helps to correct any inaccurate thoughts depression may be leading you to have, and improve self-esteem.

Cognitive behavioural therapy

This method is a combination of both behaviour therapy and cognitive therapy. By working on thought processes, patients can alter any negative behaviours that are affecting their lives. CBT is a commonly practiced form of psychotherapy which helps patients talk about their emotions and struggles in order to process them in a healthy way. It helps to create a mind map and see which thoughts are leading to certain behaviours occurring.

Humanistic therapy


Humanistic therapy works by taking the person and their experiences and helping them recognize their being and strengths. There is an emphasis on helping the patient reach their best state, and recognise their potential. It helps those who are suffering from an existential crisis to exercise their free will and realise the meaning of life. There are many forms of humanistic therapy, such as gestalt therapy and existential therapy.

Psychoanalytical therapy

Sigmund Freud did come up with this form of therapy, however, it has been revised and has had additions to it since his time in order to prove this form of therapy. Psychoanalytical therapy

works by delving deep into the patient’s unconscious, to figure out where their issue initiated from. By exploration of their interactions and behaviours during therapy, the therapist can work on identifying and treating the patient accordingly.

Holistic therapy

This form of psychotherapy incorporates elements from all the different methods. It sees the person as a whole and stresses on the importance of balance between a person’s state of mind, spirit and physicality.

All these approaches to psychotherapy have their own specialities and techniques in order to help you overcome any emotional challenges and mental health issues.
