Good news for those who are afraid of big scalpels of doctors as they often leave a scar for the rest of their life. But if University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s new success is to be believed then scar-free surgery would be a reality all over. During this particular case which involved a 4-year boy with tumor, which spread into his brain and skull and had to be removed, the doctors of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center operated the boy through his nose without making any incise; whereas, a standard surgery procedure would have left a permanent scare on his face.
Dr. Marc Bessler of The New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center said:
Getting rid of brain tumor is completely not going to be an evolutionary step, but a revolutionary step.
It is not only on skull and the brain that doctors are using this new scar-less surgery. As a matter of fact Indian doctors have been successful in performing appendectomies through the mouth, whereas New York and France doctors removed gall bladders through the vaginas of two women leaving the abdomens scar-less.
Dr Amin Kassam neurosurgeon said:
Going through the nose meant the patient could start eating right away rather than waiting for few days and he avoids the risks of a feeding tube and a surgical hole in his throat.
It’s altogether a new concept and researchers are finding new techniques for surgery that would use slender instruments through body’s natural openings like mouth, ear, and nose, etc, avoiding cutting through the skin and muscle leaving scars.
On this new approach to surgery, doctors’ fraternity believes that it holds a bright future for patients providing them faster recovery with less pain and no scars.
