BLU-U technology, markted by DUSA Pharmaceuticals of Wilmington, Mass. and approved by the Food and Drug Administration, is a photodynamic therqpy, reported to treat acne and to kill the skin-cancer causing bacteria.
The concept behind the BLU-U technology is to get to the root of the acne and release the acne fighting molecules called as porphyrins. The porphyrins start a chemical reaction resulting in the release of peroxides, which finally destroy the acne causing bacteria.
The treatment includes making the patient sit in front of the light for 15 to minutes, after which the painless treatment completely kills the bacteria. The treatment can last depending upon the requirements of the patients. The narrow band of the blue light shrinks the sebaceous gland thereby regulating the secretion of oil to the skin. Concisely, from X-rays to BLU-U is a complete reformation of UV light technology, but without any cancerous side-affects in comparison to its predecessors. On the other hands there are proofs of BLU-U destroying the actinic keratoses and pre-cancerous cells in the skin.
