A set of professional make up brushes can be quite expensive. But luckily, most materials used in make up brushes are easy to get hold of and one can prepare one’s own homemade make up brush. Read on to know all about home made make up brushes.
1. Materials makeup brushes require
a. The handle
For the handle of the brush, you may use a plastic or wooden stick. It should be at least slightly rounded which will give you a better grip. You may even use recycled items like an old chopstick!
b. For the bristles
Use synthetic or real hair, cotton wool, feathers, foam and sponges for the brush head. But be careful to use new materials. You will need different types of brush heads for different make up, for example, you will need the foam head to apply eye shadow.
2. Homemade makeup brush types
First, think what type of make up you will be using and then according to that set forth to assemble the brushes. You really don’t want to run out of brushes!
a. Small brushes
You need small brushes for eye shadow application as you need to blend together more than one color and you also need to look closely and carefully as it’s near the eye. This brush has to be a combination of soft and firm. The tip of the head should be soft while the other end a bit firmer.
b. Rounded brushes
The brush used to apply face powder (also known as the face brush) needs to have a rounded head and the head should be made up of really soft hair. The handle needs to be of medium length. This will help you to sweep the powder on your face and also blend it evenly.
c. Blusher
The head of the blusher brush should be made up of hair and the size needs to be a little bit smaller than the face brush. The handle should also be a bit smaller than the face brush but definitely bigger than than the eye shadow brush.
d. Concealer brush
The concealer brush head needs to be made out of foam and it needs to be a bit firm to pat and blend in the concealer around the eye area where it is mostly used.
e. Eye brow brush
The head of the eye brow brush needs to look like a tiny comb.
f. Lipstick brush
The lipstick brush should again have a top made up of hair which needs to be firm for even application.
Try using real hair for the powder brush and the blusher brush. But if you usually use cram based blusher then it’s advisable to have a brush which has nylon hair. Same type of brush should be used to apply cream eye shadow instead of the foam head brush which is best for applying powder eye shadow.
3. Making homemade makeup brushes
a. Use clean and new materials for the heads.
b. Measure and cut the materials into the desired sizes and shapes.
c. First, glue the heads of the brushes to the handles with a good quality water resistant glue, then tie them up with strings.
d. Use some foil wrap to cover the area which had glue and string.
e. Clean your brushes at least once a week by soaking them in lukewarm water and a mild soap. Let them dry completely on their own before you use them again.
