Teen skin care

As Sudden change in hormonal levels brings about various physiological changes. These changes eventually reflect on one’s body make up and thoughts, such as mood swings and putting on weight. Having said that, skin is yet another vulnerable part of the body at teenage. Skin requires ample attention and care at this stage since hormonal changes can cause change in pH balance as well giving way to pimples, acne and more skin issues. While most of the times, these problems can be controlled with proper home care, some might require the attention of a dermatologist where the problem persists or worsens. We have compiled some skin care tips for teenagers.

1. Cleansing

Cleansing is very important three times a day at least and every time after being outdoors. Choosing the right type of cleanser is also important for your skin. For oily skin, mild cleansers with low concentrations of alpha hydroxyl acids, such as salycilic acid and possessing anti-bacterial activity, would be ideal. Choose a creamy cleanser with salycilic acid, glycerine or propylene glycol. These are said to be humectants and have the ability to retain moisture. Avoid using soaps for the face whatever be the case oily or dry.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliate using any mild scrub once in 3 days to one week depending on your routine. This helps to remove the unwanted dead cells that may clump together and clog the pores. Massage the scrub in circular motion in one direction for 3 mins and wash off with lukewarm water. Finally dab the skin with toner to close the pores since open pores may cause clogging causing black heads. Make sure to use alcohol free cleanser for oily skin.

3. Moisturizing

It is important to keep the skin hydrated at all times. Use moisturizer or serum before going to bed so the skin absorbs and retains the moisture through the day. Applying moisturizer to damp skin is recommended since it helps trap the moisture into the cells. For oily skins, applying aloe vera extracts or gel is a better option since it does not contain oils and only helps retain the moisture content. When out in the sun, use sunscreen lotion containing SPF to protect the skin from UV radiation and to prevent pigmentation as an effect of the sun rays.

4. Healthy habit

As much as it is important to use external skin care products, it is also important to follow healthy habits such as avoiding consumption of alcohol and caffeine rich products. Make sure to get enough of sleep – about 6 to 8 hours every night. Drinking plenty of water also keeps your skin well hydrated and healthy. Regular workouts also help to improve the blood flow which in turn keeps the skin healthy.

Always use clean towel to wipe your face. If you use make up, make sure you remove it using a good cleanser and dab the skin with a toner. Skin problems at teenage unattended may have deleterious effects at a later stage of life and may lead to multiple problems. Therefore it is essential to take care of your skin at a young age.
